How to plan a relaxed holiday in Italy

What does a great holiday look like?

A great holiday is not the one with the most things in it. It is the one you come home from rested, with a handful of moments you will remember for years.

Travel days take more out of a day than most people expect. Packing, checking out, getting to the station or airport, and arriving before your room is ready can easily use up half a day, so we never treat a travel day as a day of sightseeing.

We also build in free time on purpose: a slow morning, an afternoon with nothing booked, an evening to follow your nose to a good table. That is often when the best moments happen. We avoid the pressure-cooker itinerary, with a new city every night and an early alarm every morning, because these places are best enjoyed when you are not rushing through them.

How do you keep the pace relaxed?

We design around how you like to travel, and we use a few simple habits:

• Fewer bases, longer stays. We aim for at least two or three nights in each place, so you unpack once and settle in.
• One highlight a day. A main experience, such as a guided visit, a tasting or a cooking class, with the rest of the day left open.
• Sensible timings. Later starts when you want them, a proper lunch, and time between bookings so nothing feels like a dash.
• Easy transfers. Private drivers or comfortable trains, with the details in your itinerary, so getting there is part of the pleasure.
