When to go

Italy through the seasons

Every season has its place. Tell us when you can travel and we will choose the regions that suit it best.

April to JuneSpring

Mild, green and bright. Rome, Florence, Tuscany and the lakes are at their best, and Puglia is warm without the summer crowds.

July to AugustSummer

Best by the sea, on the lakes or up in the mountains. The cities are hot and busy, and around mid-August many local restaurants and shops close.

September to OctoberAutumn

Warm days, the grape harvest and a table full of the season's food. Piemonte, Tuscany, Puglia and Sicily are all lovely.

November to MarchWinter

Quiet streets, shorter queues and long lunches. Rome, Naples and Sicily are the mildest, and the cities are at their most local.

What a local would tell you

Small things that make a big difference to how a trip feels.

01

Go early or late. The famous sights are calmest first thing in the morning and again late in the afternoon. Midday is when the tour groups arrive.

02

Book the big visits ahead. The Vatican Museums, the Uffizi and the Last Supper in Milan can sell out weeks or months in advance, so we reserve them for you early.

03

Eat when Italians eat. Lunch is usually from about half past twelve and dinner rarely starts before eight. A restaurant pushing full menus at six is often catering to tourists.

04

Stay in the smaller town. Base yourself in a quieter place nearby and visit the famous one for the day. You get the sights, and the evenings to yourself.
