Tipping is not expected in Europe the way it is in some countries, and it is always your choice. Here is a practical guide.
Do I need to tip in Europe?
Tipping is not expected the way it is in some countries, and it is always your choice. As a guide:
- Restaurants. Check your bill. In Italy a cover charge (coperto) is common, and some places add a service charge. If the service was good and none was added, leaving a few euros or rounding up the bill is appreciated.
- Cafés and bars. Loose change is plenty, and many people leave nothing.
- Taxis. Rounding up to the next euro is usual.
- Hotels. A euro or two per bag for porters, and a small amount for housekeeping if you wish.
- Guides and drivers. Not required, but welcome after a great experience: a few euros per person for a short tour, and more for a full day with a private guide or driver.
Customs differ by country. Service is usually included in France, for example, while in the UK a service charge is often added to the bill. We are happy to tell you what is normal in each place you visit.
